It’s only just now that I feel able to write again.
Four weeks ago I had to say goodbye to my beloved Dalmatian of ten and a half
years. He was my faithful companion and saw me through some hard times. (When
you have a dog that needs a lot of exercise you simply cannot stay in bed in
the morning). Getting up, going outside and walking whatever the weather was a
good discipline as well as being good for the soul.
Having never really owned a dog before it took me a while to cotton on to the
fact that it is a complete social licence for anyone to talk to you.
Immediately it seemed, anyone out walking regardless of whether they themselves
had a canine or not, could come up to me and start talking! I’ve had the most
interesting conversations with complete strangers and all because of Betly.
I have given his lead and collar to two of my grandchildren who have never
known life without him – and it will seem like a different sort of house when
they come to stay for Easter. But we will move on, and who knows, maybe there
will be another animal on its way soon.
People used to joke about Dalmatians and ask where were the other one hundred?
But to me, Betly was one in a million.
